Carol Challis receives South East Volunteer of the year award
Dedicated volunteer Carol Challis receives her 2017 South East Volunteer of the year award at this year’s Badminton Horse Trials.
Presented by eventing commentator and TV presenter, Spencer Sturmey, Carol’s first love was showing and got pulled into the world of eventing by her daughter, Lucy, to start a life as an event horse owner travelling both the international and national circuit.
After many years enjoying the sport as a mother and owner, Carol was keen to give back to the sport which had given her so much pleasure. In 2003 BE scorer Fiona Fouracre, short on help, convinced Carol to start helping her with scoring - with her knowledge and experience Carol quickly became a familiar face in the scorers at so many South East venues, Tweseldown, Farley, Rackham, Borde Hill, Wellington, Goring, to name a few and, 16 years later she continues to be a regular in the scoring caravan.
Fiona Fouracre said; “Always happy to do any job - except writing the scores up! - her infectious warm personality is a joy which is shared by all who work with her and so appreciated by the organisers who are lucky enough to have her voluntary services.”
Organiser of Goring Heath Horse Trials, Jan Cottam, added; “I can't remember anything about Carol other than she is perfect! I don't think she has ever moaned or complained. She is always there when you need her and always smiling. A complete pleasure to have in my team and makes me feel as if I've been really nice to have offered her a role whereas actually, it's a complete honour to have her join us. I hope she has a wonderful day, she deserves it.”
On behalf of British Eventing, the competitors and the many organisers we thank Carol for her contribution to our sport.
