Training for the Top – a British Eventing Charitable Foundation Masterclass

An evening, unmounted Masterclass aiming to inspire and educate in successful riding and training horses for eventing.  Andrew will showcase a clear system for training horses and riders which will enable successful progression through the levels of competition, demonstrating exercises that develop the necessary techniques and confidence required for a winning formula. The evening will appeal to not only riders wishing to learn and develop their eventing skills but also anyone who enjoys watching the sport and observing an expert at work!

Throughout the evening Andrew will inspire and educate by highlighting the importance of training in the preparation to go eventing at various different levels. Using hand-picked riders to demonstrate training up through the levels.

This masterclass counts as CPD for British Eventing Accredited Coaches and Pony Club Coaches.

  • Trainer

    Andrew Nicholson

Andrew was born in 1961 on New Zealand’s North Island. Since basing himself in Britain in the 1980s he has become one of the most successful eventers on both the one-day and three-day event circuit, regularly topping the British Eventing points leader board.

Andrew won team gold at the 1990 World Equestrian Games with Spinning Rhombus, and has been selected by New Zealand for seven Olympic Games, winning team silver in 1992 with Spinning Rhombus, team bronze in 1996 with Jagermeister and team bronze in 2012 with Nereo.

In 2010, Andrew won his first individual medal — bronze at the Kentucky World Equestrian Games on Nereo along with the team bronze. He finished just outside the individual medals in fourth place at  the London 2012 Olympic Games, claiming team bronze with Nereo.

Andrew holds the record for the most Badminton completions — 37 after the 2017 event — when he finally added the Mitsubishi Motors title on Nereo to the others he has won during his prestigious career. He has five Burghley titles: 1995 on Buckley Province, 2000 on Mr Smiffy and 2012, 2013 and 2014 on Avebury. He has also been victorious at Pau (Nereo in 2012), Kentucky (Quimbo in 2013) and Luhmuhlen  - so is the only rider to have won all 4* events in northern hemisphere!

Andrew suffered a nasty fall at the 2015 Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe which required surgery on his neck as a result, but he has recovered to compete once again at the highest level.

Andrew is based in Wiltshire with his wife Wiggy and they have two children together. He also has two daughters from his previous marriage.

Andrew’s first book Focussed was launched at Burghley 2014.
