World champions in action as horse trials season kicks off in Somerset

Olympic medal winners and world champions are among the entries at Pontispool next weekend where classes are full with a long wait list for the event which marks the venue’s 20th anniversary year.

Several new sponsors are on board including Mole Valley Farmers which head up Saturday’s Advanced Intermediate section where entries include one of the all time greats, New Zealand’s Andrew Nicholson, alongside Alex Bragg, Pippa Funnell and Harry Meade.

Title sponsor is Wychanger Barton Saddlery, sponsors ten of the 16 sections.

William Fox-Pitt looks set for a busy weekend with eight horses due to run while Meade’s eight horses include Charlotte Opperman's Away Cruising who finished sixth at last year’s Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.

Blackdown Buildings sponsor the Intermediate where the 38 entries include 2018 World Equestrian Games team gold medalist Tom McEwen and Padraig McCarthy who won individual and team silver for Ireland at the same event. Other sponsors are NAF and Connolly’s Red Mills.

Organiser Richard Mitford-Slade said: “It’s great to start the season with a full house of runners. The ground is looking great and we’ve made some new additions to the courses which will all be educational and encouraging to get people off on the right note for the start of the season.”

Entry is £10 per car on Saturday (£5 single occupant). Onsite catering is available on both days
