GB ponies complete cross country in double gold
With a total of four British riders in the top ten at the end of cross country, Great Britain holds double gold at the European Championships for Ponies in Strzegom, Poland.
With just two cross country time penalties to add to their dressage score of 26.8, Daisy’s polished round on Georgina Herrling’s SF Detroit moved them up in to the gold medal position in the individual standings, as time penalties from the overnight leaders dropped them down the order.
With problems scattered throughout the course, the final rider out for GB risked nothing as Daisy took some of the longer routes on course, securing the team with four clear rounds and helping them to a 9.3 penalty advantage over France, who sit in silver.
Freya Partridge did an impressive job as pathfinder for the GB team earlier this afternoon, cruising around the course clear inside the optimum time of 5 minutes 45 seconds. Freya not only brought valuable information back for the team, but remains on her dressage score of 33.4 penalties to move up to 10th place.
Ibble Watson was second out for the team on Erica Watson’s Bookhamlodge Pennylane, and secured Britain another clear round with just 2.4 time penalties after stopping the clock six seconds over the optimum time. Completing the second phase on a score of 32.7 sees Ibble end the day in seventh place.
Third team rider, Finn Healy, put an early scare at the influential double of skinnies at fence five behind him to power around the rest of the course on Ellie Healy’s Midnight Dancer, and stays on a score of 31.3 penalties for sixth place. A flyer at the very final combination also made the crowd gasp before Finn celebrated with a fist pump as he crossed the line clear inside the time.
Individual rider, Xanthe de Wesselow put in a brilliant clear round inside the time on Laura de Wesselow’s Baramona Lass. Adding nothing to their dressage score of 34.5, they head in to tomorrow’s show jumping in 11th.
Riding as an individual, Amelia Ludiman and Tynan Mist, had a fantastic round and looked set for another clear for GB, but a refusal at the penultimate fence saw them collect a frustrating 20 jumping penalties right at the end of the course. Along with their 5.6 time penalties to add, the duo completed cross country on a score of 58.6.
All the ponies will first have to pass the Final Horse Inspection ahead of the show jumping, which is set to get underway from 9am* (BST) on Sunday 18th August.
