In memoriam: Barry Wookey

British Eventing was very sad to learn of the passing of Barry Wookey. Barry organised the Rushall Horse Trials from 1970 and, along with his wife, was a keen horse owner.

He enjoyed much success as an event horse owner, owning several horses ridden by Angela Tucker and Jeanette Brakewell, including Plantagenet Of Rushall who completed Badminton and Burghley in the early 2000s. Barry also owned Advanced event horse Harlequin Of Rushall and Grade 1 horse Uranus Of Rushall and also got to see one of his horses, Zeus Of Rushall, go on to compete at four and five star level with Lucie McNichol.

Rushall Horse Trials ran Novice, Intermediate and Advanced classes in early April preparing horses for Badminton. Paving the way for modernised scoring methods during the 1970's, Rushall was the only horse trial in Britain to streamline the scoring process by laying telephone lines to each fence.

BE President, Jane Holderness Roddam recounted "Rushall was one of my favourite events and for me a very successful one as I remember winning the Advanced class there twice with Warrior and had great rides on several other horses. The Wookey family were very hospitable to everyone and it was a great favourite to all who competed there."

Vice President, Lucinda Green said "Barry was responsible for one of the most enlightened one day event cross country courses of that time. Rushall cross country produced really challengeing but flowing courses with original fences"

Our thoughts are will Barry’s family at this difficult time.
