Day One from Les 5 Etoiles de Pau

At the end of the first day of dressage at Les 5 Etoiles de Pau, France, Great Britain occupy seven of the top ten placings.

Piggy March leads the way for GB on John and Chloe Perry and Alison Swinburn’s 5* first-timer, Brookfield Inocent. With an incredible score of 22.2, Piggy holds second place just 0.2 penalties behind the day one leader, Australia’s Christopher Burton and Graf Liberty on 22.

Rosalind Canter sits in third place with a score of 24.8 on her own Zenshera, followed by 5* debutants 22-year-old Mollie Summerland and her own Charly Van Ter Heiden on 25.5.

One of the first combinations to get Pau – the only 5* event of 2020 – underway was Laura Collett on the first of her two rides, Mr Bass, owned by Louise Scott, Lyn How, Keith Scott, Nick How and Laura. Setting the standard early in the competition, the duo scored 26.2 penalties to finish in fifth place today. Hot on their heels in sixth place, Nicola Wilson and her 2017 European bronze medallist, Bulana, scored 26.8 for owners Mr James Lambert OBE and Mrs Jo Lambert.

Defending champions, Tom McEwen with Fred and Penny Barker, Jane Inns and Alison McEwen’s Toledo de Kerser, got their campaign off to a strong start scoring 27 for seventh place.

Yasmin Ingham with Sue Davies and Janette Chinn’s Rehy DJ – another horse to make their first 5* start at Pau – complete the top ten on 28.7, to sit just behind Australia’s Kevin McNab (Scuderia 1918 Don Quidam) on 27.6 in ninth and New Zealand’s Tim Price (Ringwood Sky Boy) on 27.2 in eight.
