CEO Update - "There were so many good stories of competitors, support teams and volunteers"

Well, it’s been a busy first month in post!

It’s now back to business as usual and back in the office after a whirlwind week at Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials - but what fantastic competition, and thrilling right to the very end. It is awe inspiring to watch the very best in our sport, to see the vast number of people it takes to both get a rider and horse to that level, and also the number of volunteers it takes to run an event so smoothly. There were so many good ‘stories’ of competitors, support teams and volunteers – each one helping make our sport so unique.

It was lovely to meet so many members and supporters over that week. It was the first BE Pavilion we have had at Badminton, and it proved to be a great success. It was well supported and we had a fantastic view of the lake and the fences around it. Lots of members came to make use of the facility and speak to the team, with a lot of positive feedback and recognition of the changes we are making. Whilst not everything is perfect, it is good that you are starting to see improvements. We will be running another next year, as well as looking at expanding to other venues throughout the year. Watch this space….

We ran our first AskBE video Q&A session recently, which I am not ashamed to admit was nerve wracking for all of us involved. I personally never thought I would need to possess a ‘selfie light’ – and did not even know such a thing existed!

However, feedback from those attending was largely very positive, and we are taking on board the points raised to continuously improve these as we move forward. We are intending to schedule another ‘general’ Q&A towards the end of July, following feedback that quarterly was the preferred timescale, but we will also run specialist sessions in between times where there is a need for us to do so. It is always a challenge to use new technologies and new ways of communicating, and we appreciate the feedback you provide to keep this relevant for you.

IT continues to be challenging for us, but improvements are being made all the time, and we hope that those of you who have experienced issues are starting to find that these are resolved. Work progresses on the Entries, Results, Admin and Scoring part of the system – known internally as EARS – and this will be a key component for the running of the sport from next season.

We are shortly to be celebrating the 100th edition of British Eventing Life magazine – it should be a good one, and our recent membership survey highlighted that it is still a popular member benefit for the majority of our members. As ever, do feed into the team if there are features you would like to see, as this helps us keep it as relevant and interesting for you as we can.

On a personal note, I’m headed to do a BE90 class at Ascot-under-Wychwood at the start of June with my old stalwart Benji - I’m hoping we manage to leave more of the show jumps up than we sometimes do, but he will be delighted to get out on a cross country course again!

I hope you are all having a fun and enjoyable start to the season, and wish you all the best of luck wherever you are out and about over the coming weeks.
