British Eventing CEO Update on COVID-19

British Eventing CEO Update on COVID-19

It would be fair to say that I never imagined I would ever face the situation we are currently in. Across much of the world, many of us are facing circumstances we have not previously experienced. The spread and the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) has been far reaching and, for many, devastating.

In light of yesterday’s government announcement, the Board of BE took the decision to cancel all competition with immediate effect. We have also cancelled BE organised training. I have been asked how long the restrictions will last for – I wish I had the answer!

What I can say is that we are all focused on being in a position to deliver the sport in as quick a time as we can when the restrictions are lifted. We will keep the situation under constant review, and our discussions are very much focused on the planning for the restart of our sport. We know how key it is to everyone involved in eventing that we resume sport as quickly as we can, and we will be doing all we can do to facilitate this. We will keep you updated.

There are inevitably going to be a lot of questions. Some we can answer and others we need to consider carefully. For example; MERS, championships and qualifications.

Some questions we can answer now are:

  • Where you are booked onto a BE training course, these will be refunded as and when the date of the course has passed.
  • For now we are not intending to refund membership but will keep this under review.

Head office and contacting us

As a result of the government guidance, we are making arrangements where we can for HQ staff to work from home starting tomorrow. We are fortunate that our staff work with laptops, and that much of the software and tools we use are cloud based.

As we cannot foresee whether, or how many, of our staff may be directly impacted by the virus, we ask that you send your queries via the contact us button or email addresses below where possible. These have been set up to be monitored and accessible by multiple members of staff, to ensure that we are able to respond to all enquiries.

Contact Us Here

Or email the department on:

The main head office number will not be manned, and we ask that you use the most appropriate email to contact us – if you would like to speak to someone, please put this in your email and we will call you back. Where possible, we will be diverting each individual’s office direct dial telephone numbers to individual’s own phones. We ask that organisers continue to contact their Regional Coordinator in the first instance.

IT update

We committed last week to providing a regular weekly IT update.  The Board met with a number of representatives from our stakeholder groups to obtain feedback on the system performance after the first few weeks of the season.  It was a very useful session, resulting in a better understanding of where the system is working and where more work needs to be done for example on sectioning and times.  We will continue to work with these representatives as we move forward with EARS and will use the time given to us to focus on making the improvements needed.

I would like to thank you all for your continued support of the sport.  It is a difficult time for all of us.

Jude Matthews, BE CEO
