cross countrySome Facts to Know Before Registering Your Horse

Here are some things to know before registering your horse with BE and buying Horse Season Tickets or Horse Day Passes.

Horse Season Tickets can only be purchased by Full or Owning Membership types. They run from January to December each year, half season tickets run from 1st July to December. Any horse with a Season Ticket will be allocated ballot numbers for priority entries (one per month, plus two Super Ballot numbers).

A Horse Day Pass can be purchased by Full, Supporter, Day Pass or Owning members. Horse Day Passes mean the rider can compete up to a certain level without the horse needing to have a Season Ticket. No ballot numbers are allocated with Horse Day Passes and there are restrictions on the level and number of times a rider can compete on Horse Day Passes within a season. A Horse Day Pass will need to be purchased for each entry under the following conditions:

  • If the rider has Full Membership, the horse can compete in an unlimited number of classes up to Intermediate Novice level using Day Passes
  • If the rider is a Day Pass or Supporter Member, the rider can compete in up to four classes from BE90 to Intermediate Novice level – both the horse and rider will need to purchase a Day Pass for each entry
  • Any eligible horse can compete in an unlimited number of BE80(T) classes using Day Passes with riders who have any competing membership type – that is Full, Supporter or Day Pass Membership

Information for all horses

Passport Details:
These must be sent into the office as soon as you complete an Equine Registration.  You can fax, scan or post a copy of the: Name page,  Breeding Details and Year of Foaling
from the passport into the office and you have 28 days to do this before your horse is suspended and you will be unable to make any entries.

Foreign horses, including Irish, will need to send these details in straight away as they do not have the 28 day period.  We also need a printout of the results from the country of origin if the horse is older than 5 years.  You will not be able to make any entries until we have received this information. If you have an unnamed Irish passport you need to send the passport back to Ireland in order to have the name inserted before we can accept the horse registration.

Minimum height for registering a horse for Eventing is 142cm without shoes.  However, for BE80(T) classes only, the minimum height that a pony can compete at is 137cm without shoes.

Horses can have a season ticket and passes from five years of age.  Four year old horses can only compete in four year old classes and a maximum of four times in the season, including the Championship.  From May 1st a four year old can enter a BE80T class.  Four year olds can only compete on day or training passes.

Your horse must have had at least the first two injections for flu before it can compete and all booster injections must be given at intervals of no more than one year apart.  Horses cannot compete on the same day as being given an injection.

For FEI competitions the horse must have its booster injections at intervals of six months and must leave 7 clear days after vaccination before stabling at an FEI event - see the rule book for full details.

Change of Ownership:
You need to complete a change of ownership form before the ownership can be changed on the database.  When you know you are going to purchase the horse it is best if you take this form with you when you complete the deal.

If your horse has competed less than three times in the season due to injury, then a partial refund can be applied for.  You need to send in a copy of a relevant vets bill or letter and you must apply before 31st December of the year in which the season ticket was purchased. Please make sure that the vets letter includes the BE REGISTERED name of the horse and not the stable name.

If you buy a horse with points and you want to compete it at a lower level of competition, you can apply for a downgrade.  The horse cannot have won any points in the current or preceding two seasons and it can only be downgraded once.  You will not be able to compete in the Grassroots or U18 Championships on a downgraded horse .

Ballot Numbers:
If you buy a season ticket, your horse will have ballot numbers allocated for each month and two Super numbers.  These numbers can be allocated when you make an entry to an event and give you a higher priority for entry should the event be oversubscribed.  If an event has too many entries by ballot day, the entry secretary will stop taking entries and ballot out the excess entries.

Day pass entries will be taken out first, then multiple entries, full members with season ticket horses and then entries with ballot numbers on (see Rule Book for further details).  If you are balloted out on a ballot number you will be able to use that number again as an additional Super ballot number.

If there is an event in the month that you want to do then allocate that event the appropriate month's ballot number when you make your entry.  If there is an event that you really do not want to miss, then use one of your Super ballot numbers - these give you a virtually guaranteed entry.  Once you allocate a number to an event that number is deemed to be used unless you are balloted out on it or you withdraw before ballot date.

You will be emailed ballot numbers or you can find them at the bottom of your horse's details page, see below.

Where to find details about your horse:
If you need your horse's day pass number, training pass number, ballot numbers or registration number you can find all this on its details page.  Just log in to your Membership via the My Details page scroll down till you see the name then click on the name.  All the details concerning the horse will be on this page.
