Event Reports: Funnell & Todd Battle for the Lead
After a hectic couple of weeks for the Point Two South East Eventers League, there have been several changes at the top of the rankings. After the events at Brightling Park, Tweaseldown and Eridge there have been some significant changes to the leaders but certain other riders continue to keep their sections firmly in their grip.

Pippa Funnell has taken the lead in the Intelligent Worming Leading Horse and Rider after Billy Landretti won the Open Intermediate at Eridge. The horse who had to be pulled up in a CIC*** at Houghton a couple of weeks earlier having pulled his front shoes off, was never headed at Eridge and lead his section by seven points at that time but Mark Todd is now closing the gap with Chuckleberry who was 4th in the CIC** at Brightling. Pippa commented that, “I just thought I would give Crunchie (Billy Landretti) a couple of OI runs and make him get on with it, I think he gets easily distracted sometimes.” The area legend is also now second in the Leading Mares section with Billy Shannon where she is in danger of winning her own prize as it is sponsored by The Billy Stud! However she is just being held off top spot there by Lisa Culbeams Cullawn Holly. Pippa has also recently won Bramham CCI*** with Redesigned and been selected on that horse for the coming World Championships.
Mares take the lead

Talking of those, and mares, Pippa's team mate Tina Cook has two mares currently ranked. Estralita is closing the gap on Billy Shannon in the Mares section ater both ran well in the CIC** at Brightling and is also placed in the Seahorse Intermdiate section, where Tina also has Odini in contention.

Sam Penn and Aileen Tizzard maintain their advantage in the Point Two Pre Novice and Seahorse Veteran Sections with Tickeridge and Kavanagh respectively. The former is the commanding leader of the Baileys Overall Grassroots after another win at Brightling Park.
Claire Chamberlayne and Old Kent Road still top the Racing Santuary's Racehorse to Eventer class and Claire has been delighted with the grey geldings progress this season as he has now reached Intermediate level. “He is the kindest, sweetest horse you could wish to find and tries so hard. I am loving having him” she said. The nine year old was no back number when racing either, he won a Listed race in the USA among others.

Polly Hingston's Wooden It Be Nice is just in front of the Seahorse Six year Old section and Sophie Callan heads the Littleton Manor Equestrian Under 21's. However it must be said that her slender advantage over Emily Llewellyn has probably been maintained due to Emily's commitments elsewhere. Having had a marvellous time at Badminton, Emily recently took her best horses to Barbury Castle CIC***/** in Wiltshire where she was in the top ten on both Pardon Me and Society Spice in the three star section as well as being well placed on Balloo in the two star. This has earned her a team place for the Young Rider squad amd she is also a reserve for the Senior team although FEI rules prevent her competing in both during the same season.

Local riders gather SEEL points
Other super SEEL results recently include Brook Staples winning the CIC* at Brightling on Sarah Whitmore's Walidos and Gemma Tattersall the 2* version at the same show on Chamrock, a former Pippa Funnel ride. Emily Baldwin was best of the British at the CHIO in Aachen, Germany, where alongside Pippa Funnell she helped the British team to third place. Local vet Alison Weston who won a novice section at Eridge must have also been delighted with her 5th place in the 1* at Brightling, which was one of her targets for the season with Amaretto van het Hof. Although she bought the horse four years ago from another local Francis Whittington, this is the first season the pair have really got going after the horse spent 18 months suffering from a mysterious respiratory virus which nearly killed him. “He has been excellent this season, he has really got going and I am looking forward to our Brightling outing” said Ali at Eridge. All's well that ends well and SEEL moves on to Little Mattingley and Smiths Lawn for the next opportunity to win points.
