Owl Financial British CIC2* European Championship Team

Indiana Limpus 2017 CIC2*

Owl Financial British CIC2* European Championship Team

2017 Championships

27 - 30 July -  Tongeren, Belgium: Congratulations to the 2017 Owl Financial British CIC2* European Eventing Championship team who secured a team silver medal along with Indiana Limpus (pictured) who took the individual bronze. Full results HERE

These Championships give Europe's best 2* level riders the chance to compete in a unique eventing format in an international championship every two years at rotating locations around Europe.

Potential squad members compete under the watchful eye of the  Owl Financial British CIC2* team selectors, who use both national and international competitions to view prospective team members for this popular European Championship.

These biennial championships carry a unique format, differing from the normal Eventing Championships by having six members in the team (not four) and the inclusion of a “team dressage” phase. Phases of the competition are:

  • Phase 1: this is the “team dressage” in which all six team members perform a prescribed test in a 20 x 60 arena together under the command of the Chef d'Equipe.
  • Phase 2: individual dressage test.
  • Phase 3: Cross Country.
  • Phase 4: Show Jumping.

The championships (formerly known as the Rural Riders European Championship) have evolved from being a competition for nations who perhaps were not always considered contenders for the top level championships such as Olympic, World or European Championships at a senior level. However, the growing popularity of this competition means that it is now recognised by the GB selectors as an important British Team opportunity and championship experience for riders making their way up the ranks.

The unique “team dressage” originated as a way for Dutch and German breeders to show off several horses to clients at one time. Test movements were defined and the test became a regular competition for amateur riders on the continent.

Britain first competed in the championship in 1991 and until 2016 it was managed by British Riding Clubs. Since 2016, the squad has been managed by British Eventing.

Rider Profile

There are generally two types of rider who can enjoy eventing career progression through the opportunity of riding for GB in the CIC2* European Championship.

  • Those who are no longer eligible for BE national and international youth teams (covering riders from 12 to 21 years old).
  • Riders who were later starters to eventing or those who during their “youth” years lacked the necessary horse power to compete at 2* level.

Notable GB riders such as Jonathan Chapman (now the team trainer), Antoinette McKeown, Matthew Heath have all been past members of the team along with riders who have now been selected for Nations Cup Teams; Jodie Amos, Ros Canter and Franky Reid-Warrilow.

There are some eligibility requirement that need to be considered. They are:

Riders and horses either separately or together must not have completed a CCI3* or a CICO3* in the 2 years prior to the championship unless this was as a Junior or Young Rider.

Riders and horses either separately or together must not have completed a CCI4*, a European or World Championship or Olympic Games at any time.

This is a successful team as the recent results show:

  • 2017 – team silver, individual bronze
  • 2015 – team silver, individual gold
  • 2013 – team silver, individual bronze
  • 2011 – team gold, individual silver
  • 2009 – team bronze, individual bronze
