Nicholson Edges Townend Out in the 2007 Top 100

In a cat and mouse chase finish, Andrew Nicholson has pipped Oliver Townend to top the 2007 Top 100 Riders Ranking.

Oliver had a flying start to the season, taking an early lead in the rankings. As the season unfolded, and the International events came thick and fast, the lead changed several times. The mid-season ranking for the 1st July, showed that Andrew was the first to pass the 1000 point barrier, with Oliver hot on his heels.

They were neck and neck going in to Burghley, but as Oliver failed to finish, on either of his rides, it allowed Andrew to take a healthy lead.

A 12th placing at the European Championships in Pratoni, gave Oliver the chance to catch up, while good placings from both riders at Boekelo and Le Lion meant the title would be decided at Pau. With only Andrew competing in the new CCI****, a top ten place would put him above Oliver and take the title.

Luckily for Andrew a disappointing show jumping round did not drop him out of the top ten and he finished in sixth place. The extra 130 points were all he needed to head the top 100 on a massive 1937 points, with Oliver in second on 1886 points.

Four riders broke the 1000 point barrier, with William Fox-Pit (1185) and Lucy Wiegersma (1015) taking third and fourth places.

In a reversal of the rider rankings, Oliver’s World and European horse, Flint Curtis, has lifted the top horse of 2007 title with Andrew’s Lord Killinghurst being the runner-up.
