Sir Hugh Neill KCVO CBE TD, aged 96, died peacefully at home on Sunday 5th November. Sir Hugh, a busy businessman, served on numerous public and charitable roles. He was High Sheriff of Hallamshire in 1972/73 and HM Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire 1985 to 1996. He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in June 1996.

He was a BHS Council member between 1984-1997, Chairman of the Horse Trials Committee, 1984-1990 and received the British Horse Society’s Award of Merit in 1988. He was a passionate owner also, having horses not only ridden by his daughter Sue Browne but also by Sue Benson.

He was a Past Captain and President of Lindrick Golf Club (between Sheffield and Worksop). He has served on various committees of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (the game’s ruling body) and was its Captain in 1981/82.

Hugh Neill was a beloved husband of Anne (and the late Jane), father of Jill Holah, Sue Browne, Michael and the late Fiona. He has two grand-daughters, a grandson and three great-grandchildren.

There will be a private family funeral.
