Karen Dixon comments on the Airowear BE80(T)

The first of the Airowear BE80(T) classes got underway last weekend and mark the start of this year’s Eventing season. Over 231 horse and rider combinations were entered in the class all over the country held at Askham Bryan College (Yorkshire), Aston-Le-Walls (Northants) and Moreton (Dorset).

Former British Olympian Karen Dixon (née Straker) was the BE Accredited Coach on hand to support riders in the Airowear BE80(T) sections at Askham Bryan College last weekend.

Karen pictured above sharing advice with two competitors last weekend commented: “I have been involved with the BE80(T) initiative since it started and have really enjoyed seeing the level of competitors enter rise year on year. It is a fantastic gateway for people who have only taken part in local hunter trials or unaffiliated events to experience what BE has to offer. It’s also a great way for people to get back in to the sport and gain confidence.

“I get really stuck in with helping I have to say! I like to offer as much advice as I possibly can to riders that are taking part in BE80(T) classes, so I offer advice on things as basic as how to stud up, what size studs to be using and why, plus what tack riders should be using in each phase.

“A small tip I like to give people nervous about cross country is that they should imagine the course broken up into three parts with three key points on the course where they take a breath, it helps them concentrate on something else as well as riding the course.

“I do all this because I think it’s so important that riders instil good habits before they step up the ranks. I find it genuinely rewarding to give encouragement and watch people’s confidence grow.”

AirowearAbout Airowear BE80(T)

The BE80(T), now under new title sponsorship from Airowear gives both members and non-members an opportunity to enter a British Eventing competition which also acts as a training exercise.

The fences are to be no bigger than 80cm and the dressage test is the same as those ridden at BE90, giving a perfect introduction to the competitive sport. To help riders prepare in this class there is a dedicated BE Accredited Coach on hand to offer advice and support free of charge.
