First - time Event Horse owner’s Duke of Cavan selected onto World Class Equine Pathway Programme

When Natalie Stevens purchased her “next ride”, the Duke of Cavan (Cavan), in Ireland two years ago, her plan was to produce the horse for Grassroots Eventing with the aim to compete at Novice level. She had an inkling that there was more potential in this horse and when she started a family had the dilemma of what to do with Cavan, knowing that selling wasn’t an option at the time.

As a family they sat down and decided on next steps and the horse’s future. Having a horse that you have specifically purchased as an owner is one thing but making the move from a horse you had planned to ride and take off to events and now deciding on how, where, and to whom you should send your horse with no prior experience of how Event Horse ownership works is quite another.

After much deliberation it was decided and the talented young rider, Millie Dumas, was approached to see if she would trial the horse. Initially this was to see if Cavan could be in training with Millie whilst Natalie took time-out for her family and then review. Little did they know that they were about to embark on the exciting and addictive journey of Event Horse ownership.

The Duke of Cavan’s first season with Millie and the Dumas Team has exceeded his owner’s expectations.  He has been consistent this season with Millie and has been placed every time coming 2nd CIC* Gatcombe and 5th CCI* Osberton.

Natalie has recently received the news that The Duke of Cavan has been selected onto the World Class Equine Pathway Programme. The purpose of this is to identify and support world class horses with the aim to have horses qualify to compete and challenge for medals at the World Equestrian Games and Olympics.

What a fantastic way to finish your first year as an Owner and many congratulations to everyone involved.

Natalie “loves being an Event Horse owner, it feels great to know that you have given your horse the best opportunity to reach their full potential. He is a bold and clever horse and teamed with Millie he is in the most capable hands. I had ambitions to compete at Novice with him once but am now settled into motherhood.”

Natalie is really enjoying being an Owner and says that “now the floodgates have opened, it would be unfair to stifle his ability”.  Being an amateur rider, it was never my plan to pass the reins to anyone but the Dumas Team are doing such a great job, and now that Cavan has been selected to join the Equine Pathway we know we have made the right decision.”
