Pau Hosts Final Leg of the HSBC Classics

Following the British success at Le Lion last week, a strong field of British riders have made the long journey through France to contest the final leg of the inaugural HSBC FEI Classics at Pau, 23 – 26 October. The newly established HSBC FEI Classics is a series uniting the top end of the International Eventing circuit, namely the five four Star Eventing competitions in the northern hemisphere. The Top Ten placed riders at each event receive points; the riders with the highest number of points, at the end of the season, are awarded prize money.

The eighteen British combinations make up fifty percent of the world class field. The British contingent is headed by World Champion, Zara Phillips riding Tsunami II, owned by Melanie Duff and herself. The pair finished fifth in the CCI3* at Barroca in the spring and make their four star debut at Pau.

Joining her are Olympic Bronze medallists William Fox-Pitt and Mary King. William has already won two CCI4* events this year at Luhmühlen and Burghley and is topping the HSBC FEI Classics leader board. He rides Idalgo who returns to four star competition, having not competed in an international event since 2006. Mary has two rides, the first being her Olympic partner Call Again Cavalier and the second is Kings Fancy whom she re-routed following an un-successful trip to Boekelo.

There is strong competition in the field including three previous four star winners, Nicholas Touzaint and Hildago de l’Ile (Badminton 2008), Andrew Hoy and Moon Fleet (Badminton 2006 and Burghley 2004) and Bettina Hoy with Ringwood Cockatoo who took the Luhmühlen title in 2005.
